…well let’s just say I love electricity. Like I love electricity so much I’m making goo-goo eyes at it. I want to have its babies.
You may have heard about our massive storm that knocked out power for a million people in this area. Let me just give you the personal angle:
It.
Blew.
Chunks.
Life without electricity is BORING. Yeah it was a great opportunity to catch up on my reading…(the latest issue of Wired is great, btw) but once it got too dark to read by natural light (reading by flickering candle will give you a migraine) there was NOTHING to do. And nowhere to go…power was out EVERYWHERE.
By 7:30 last night I was reduced to taking two Excedrin PMs and going to bed wearing my coat after a dinner of 5 caramels left over from Halloween.
The only thing that saved my sanity was my Zune. Thank J Allard almighty they put an FM tuner in that bad boy, as that was my only source for any kind of news. The news was bad: it could take up to a week to restore power. Luckily it was out for about 28 hours in my neighborhood.
Lessons learned:
- I need a bigger than a penlight flashlight and extra batteries. Yes, I am the girl who used a can of corn in lieu of a hammer to build furniture, but in 2007, I am going to get some tools!
- I need some food that requires neither refridgeration nor heating. The half-stack of stale Ritz crackers didn’t go far.
- The pioneers were probably cranky, but well-rested.
- I have become dependent on the Internet. When the power came back the first thing I did was turn on the heat. Second thing was fire up the laptop.

I was really stoked to come home to power yesterday–I expected to be one of those out for a few days as I believe Seattle City Light hates Shoreline.If anything, not having power at home actually made me happy to go to work!
I have just read on Maj’s and I came to ‘see’ you, Girlie.I can’t imagine life without heating in the winter in Belgium’s humble winter, imagine there?!? Keep yourself warm (sleeping with the cats might be a solution) and take care.*hugs*
